Participation in nonprofit organizations

The North-Western Shipping Company, being one of the leaders in the industry and a participant in the most important projects of shipping industry, is a member of various nonprofit associations and unions. These include:

The Russian Chamber of Shipping

The Russian Chamber of Shipping (Union), established more than 5 years ago, incorporates Russian shipping companies, classification societies, design bureaus, scientific and design organizations, as well as educational institutions in the industry. The Association seeks to independently develop business rules and standards and relations with customers, as well as mechanisms for extrajudicial settlement of disputes between members of the Association and consumers of their services. The Association interacts with the State Duma and Council of the Federation at the Federal Assembly, federal and regional government executive bodies. Agreements have been signed for cooperation with the RF Ministry of Transport and Federal Agency of Sea and River Transport. A procedure has been determined for interaction with the Federal Transport Supervision Service.
Special consideration is given to improvement and development of the Russian laws and by-laws for sea and inland navigation, rate and tax regulations, property and land relations, and international law. A procedure for establishing service dues for use of inland waterway infrastructure, sea port dues, distinctive features in confirming VAT zero rate when international transport services are rendered; a procedure for taxation of vessels registered in the Russian International Register; application of privileges during customs clearing of vessels after repairs abroad — these are only a part of important matters considered by the Association in interaction with the RF Ministry of Transport, and the Association takes steps to resolve such matters. Under the Agreement for Cooperation with the Federal Agency of Sea and River Transport the Association protects the interests of shipping companies in the matters concerning condition of inland waterways and provision of guaranteed clearances for vessel ways:

  • higher competitive ability of companies whose activity is related to RF inland water transportation and overseas transportation;
  • protection of the rights and legitimate interests of Association members, development of proposals for refining RF current legislation in respect of professional activity of Association members;
  • representation of Association members’ interests at the federal and local legislative, executive and other governmental bodies.

Marine Council at the Saint Petersburg Governor’s Office

Marine Council at the Saint Petersburg Governor’s Office was established in 2000 and united shipping and agency companies, educational institutions, design bureaus, shipyards, and registers for development of agreed decisions to improve professional activities of Council members, and form a favorable image of the maritime capital.

Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO)

More than 25 years the North-Western Shipping Company is the member of the largest international shipping association BIMCO.

BIMCO is the world’s largest international shipping association, with 2,300 members in around 130 countries. We provide a wide range of services to our global membership – which includes shipowners, operators, managers, brokers and agents.

BIMCO’s core objective is to facilitate the commercial operations of our members by developing standard contracts and clauses, and providing quality information, advice and education.

BIMCO promotes fair business practices, free trade and open access to markets and we are a strong advocate for the harmonisation and standardisation of all shipping related activity.

BIMCO actively promotes the application of globally agreed regulatory instruments – we are accredited as a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) with all relevant United Nations agencies and other regulatory entities.
